Proper Tree & Shrub Planting Is The Most Important First Step For A Beautiful Landscape.

Proper  planting is so crucial to the long term health and success of your trees and shrubs. Careful planning before even putting a shovel in the ground will ensure your landscape will look its best for many years to come.

Selecting the right plant for the right area is the first step. Although you may see a photograph of a tree or a shrub in a catalogue that you like, that particular plant may not grow well in your particular landscape area. Does that tree require full sun or will it tolerate shade? Will that shrub grow in a heavy clay based soil, or does it require a sandy-loam mixture? Will that plant tolerate our climate zone, and survive our typical winter weather conditions? Will that plant survive with the typical moisture levels that your landscape receives during he summer? These questions are all important, because if any one of them is answered with a "no", then the long term potential of that plant growing well in your yard has been dramatically reduced.

Plant Selection

Site Preparation

Just as equally important to the long term health of your plants, is proper site preparation. Trying to grow a tree, shrub, perennial or an annual in poor soil conditions can be a frustrating, disappointing venture.  It is vitally important to have good garden soils, complete with manure and peat so your new plants can get off to a good start, and maintain healthy growth over the years. Poor soil will dramatically restrict future root growth, resulting in thin, sparse top growth and a weak plant. This in turn leaves your plant susceptible to insect and disease infestations, compounding your problems. Do it right from the beginning--have Underhill's prepare your planting areas with proper soils--your plants will reward you with lush, healthy growth.
